TOPIC: "Chlorine in Your Home"

Last week we talked about the importance of getting the chlorine out of the water you bathe in, and I’ve added the link for shower/bath filters for you again at the end of this “Secret” because truly, filtering your shower and bath water is the single most important step you can take to improving your overall health, next to quitting smoking.

Today we are going to talk about getting the chlorine out of the rest of your home environment.

The immediate harmful effects of chlorine are often hidden, which means that you need to stop and think about the dangerous possibilities of using products and preparations containing chlorine.

Chlorine is one of today’s most heavily used toxic chemical agents. Where will you find it in your home, other than in your unfiltered shower or bath water?

You may be most familiar with chlorine in bleaching products for removing stains and dirt in your laundry and making your whites whiter.

This is certainly a hidden danger for your health because you put those clothes on your body and the chlorine in your washing solution then enters the pores in your skin and gets into your blood stream causing serious havoc in your body.

Paper: Chlorine is also used to bleach paper. Why is this dangerous? Simply because the process required to bleach paper creates a reaction between the lignan, which is the natural fiber a tree uses to hold its cellulose fibers together, the chlorine and the cellulose itself that produces the most toxic substances ever created.

The most dangerous of these you’ve no doubt heard about because they are a family of 75 different chemicals known as dioxins. Dioxins are dangerous, toxic chemicals which are the waste products that pulp and paper mills discharge into the atmosphere as well as many other chemicals called organochlorines.

So how does bleaching paper affect you? The dioxins that are produced in the bleaching process don’t break down, which means that they have been accumulating in our air, water and soil for years and years.

We breathe them into our bodies, we drink them in our water and we eat them in our food sources that are grown in soil contaminated with dioxins.

Dioxins are now so widespread that it’s estimated that virtually every man, woman and child in America has dioxins in their body and that each day we ingest 300-600 times more than the so-called “safe” dose.

Dioxins are deadly – so much so that on October 27, 1983 the American Public Health Association unanimously passed a resolution “urging” American industry to stop using chlorine.

Dioxins are believed to be the most carcinogenic chemicals known to science and research has conclusively linked dioxins to cancer, reproductive disorders, deformities, developmental problems in children and immune system breakdown.

Household Cleaners: Chlorine can be found in off the shelf cleaners everywhere, although it may be hidden from obvious view behind a less known alias, such as “sodium hypochlorite” or “hypochlorite”.

Cleaners that pose the most immediate threat to your health are those such as automatic dishwashing detergents, chlorine bleach, chlorinated disinfectant cleaners, mildew removers and toilet bowl cleaners.

Just as it can in your unfiltered shower, breathing the fumes of cleaners containing chlorine can irritate your lungs. This can be particularly dangerous for those suffering from heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems, such as asthma or emphysema.

Chlorine is also a highly corrosive substance and, as with your unfiltered shower water, can burn your eyes and damage your skin.

When you use detergents containing chlorine in your dishwasher or washing machine you are polluting the air in your home, which you are then breathing.

No matter where the chlorine is used in your home, once it’s mixed with water in your dishwasher, washing machine or shower and bath, toxic chemicals are released into your home environment.

The bottom line is that showering every day in water that contains chlorine and other toxic elements is highly dangerous, and products containing chlorine are dangerous to keep in your home.

Research has conclusively linked exposure to chlorine and dioxins created from using chlorine in bleach products to birth defects, cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders and immune system failures.

What can you do to protect yourself and your family from the hazards of chlorine in your home? Many things.

First and foremost get yourself a shower and bath filter. For good shower and bath filters please go here!

Next, buy paper products (including coffee filters) that aren’t bleached with chlorine. Use only household cleaners, laundry products and dish detergents made without chlorine.

It’s the New Year – be part of the pollution solution and start it off on a positive, healthy note. Protect yourself and your family by filtering your shower and bath water and using only products without chlorine.
