"Learn the FATS of LIFE"

What do you really know about fat and how it affects your overall health?

If you’re like many, you’ve been inundated with fat-free this and low-fat that for years now and the very word “fat” has become a dirty word if you’re concerned about your health and the health of your family.

The truth is that it’s not so much that fat is a problem in your diet, but rather if your diet consists of poor quality fats, then this can cause health problems.

Fat is absolutely essential in your diet for many reasons, such as energy production, maintaining metabolic rate, brain development, immune function, hormone and thyroid balance, wound healing, healthy hair, nails and skin, fertility, good eyesight, and oxygen uptake, protecting organs, keeping us warm, protecting cell walls, and storing and transporting fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

The bad fats out there unfortunately can actually curtail or interfere with how the body maintains a healthy state and most of those fat-free convenience foods contain plenty of added sugars, including artificial sweeteners, which can do far more damage than good.

Eating excessive amounts of bad or saturated fats can increase risk of chronic disease, and it’s these bad fats that most of us are consuming too much of. Unfortunately, these saturated fats are the most commonly found fats in our diets.

Saturated (bad) fat is a fat that is solid at room temperature. These types of fats raise bad cholesterol levels in the blood stream, which can dramatically increase the risk of heart disease as well as stroke and some cancers.

Saturated fat is readily found in animal products, such as red meat, poultry, and full fat dairy products as well as in tropical oils such as palm and coconut oil and research has proven that diets high in saturated fats are associated with higher risks of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

It’s important to find out which fats are good for us because these good fats help us maintain a healthy body.

Be on the lookout for the healthy or unsaturated fats because we need these fats in our diet so that our bodies can properly perform all those important functions listed above.

Unsaturated (healthy) fat can be found in both plant and animal sources and are essential to maintaining a healthy body.

Look for healthy fat in vegetable oils such as MacNut™ oil (made from macadamia nuts), hemp oil, or olive, safflower, sunflower and soybean oils.

Good oil can also be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna, sardine and lake trout.

Remember that even though it’s important to decrease your daily unhealthy or saturated fat intake because this will decrease your risk of heart related disease, stroke and some cancers, it’s just as important to keep your fat intake in perspective because healthy unsaturated fat intake is vitally important to maintaining your healthy body.
