"Flaxseed: Seeds, Nuts & Grains Series"

Does your daily diet contain flax seed? If not, I would highly recommend that you begin to add this wonder seed right now.

All of the amino acids essential to human health are present in flax seed. The essential amino acids every body needs cannot be made by the human body and therefore must be provided through your daily diet.

So what can this tiny, but mighty seed do for you?

For starters it can help to put your Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids back into balance. In the typical North American diet, we consume far too much Omega 6 and do not get enough Omega 3.

Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is known to be the basic cause of major mental illness today. Medical researchers contend that the level of Linolenic acid in the American diet has been reduced by 80% in the past 100 years. No wonder so many of us aren’t thinking straight!

Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils are two fatty acids that together form the membranes of every one of the billions of cells in our bodies. They control the way cholesterol works in our systems and make up a very large part of the brain’s active tissues.

Omega-3 and 6 fats are the only fats that become prostaglandins, which play key roles in regulating the cardiovascular, immune, digestive and reproductive functions, as well as inflammation and healing, brain function, and body heat and calorie burning for weight loss.

Reports by the Karolinske Institute in Sweden show that flax contains 800-mg/kg lignan, which is a documented anti-cancer agent. This is 100 times more than the best whole grains.

The benefits of lignan in the prevention of colon and mammary cancers are readily available to all people by simply adding milled flax to their diet.

Just one tablespoon of milled flax seed contains up to 3800-mg of ALNA, the primary Omega-3. This is ten times as much ALNA as most fish oil capsules contain, without the drawbacks of questionable taste and high cholesterol and saturated fat levels associated with fish oil.

Don’t forget the fiber. Fiber in flax is famous for its effective cholesterol lowering abilities, most likely because it prevents cholesterol and bile acids from being reabsorbed into your body. Instead, they attach to the fiber and are carried out of the body along with wastes. Fiber is essential for maintaining regularity and preventing constipation.

The mucilage (soluble fiber) located below the outer coating of the flax seed has the ability to buffer excess acid. This acts as a natural laxative to soothe and protect the sensitive intestinal lining and improve regularity without the side effects.

Although flax seed has been used therapeutically for over 5,000 years, it’s only recently that scientists have learned that flax seed may lower blood cholesterol levels that are often associated with heart attacks, prevent colon and breast cancer, improve moods, diminish allergies and produce healthier skin.

Just two tablespoons of ground flax seed per day helps maintain regularity. If you are presently on a low fiber diet, you may experience increased intestinal gas for the first day or two.

Milled flax seed absorbs 8 times its weight in water, so you will need to drink an extra glass of water each day.

Weight loss may occur when you add just three tablespoons of milled flax seed per day to your diet.

Flax has a light, nutty flavor that goes well in cereal, on toast, in salads, cooked into meatloaf, sprinkled on yogurt, mixed into a smoothie or fruit juice, or baked into your favorite recipes.

So do yourself and your body a big favor by adding the mighty flax seed to your diet every day and get back to nature.

To release the nutrients in flaxseed, you must grind the seeds, unless you can purchase them already ground. An easy way to grind flaxseeds is in your coffee grinder.
