"Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meats"
Many people choose not to eat meat for all sorts of reasons, but there’s been a great deal of scary headline news these days about Mad Cow Disease that may have many of you considering the vegetarian alternative just for this reason alone.
Therefore, I think this may be a good time to gain a little education with respect to what’s healthy meat and what isn’t.
First of all, North Americans tend to eat way too much meat than is necessary for a healthy diet, and when they do eat it, they tend to eat very large portions. This type of eating has lead our society down an ever expanding road to
obesity and heart disease.
A simple way to turn the tables on this lifetime habit of overeating meat, is to slowly increase your amount of fresh fruits and vegetables while decreasing the size of your meat portions until your main course becomes the fruits and vegetables and your meat portion a side dish.
Why not try some of those great meat
alternatives, such as veggie burgers made from soy? There was a time when these products tasted about as appetizing as shredded cardboard, but those days are long gone and there are now many tasty alternatives. As well, the veggie burger route is low in calories and high in protein as well as being cholesterol free and a good source of dietary
fiber, too.
You may not be aware that large amounts of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers are used to grow feed for animals, which as well as wreaking havoc in our bodies when we eat animals raised in this way, also contributes to pollution when they make their way onto the land and into our water supply.
Many people eat meat from highly questionable sources and then wonder why they don’t feel so good. Far too many “meat” products are made from low-grade, hormone-laced cattle raised in cramped conditions, wading through their own dung, feeding on cheap corn mixed with synthetics and ground up animal parts. Sounds yummy, doesn’t it?
Why would anyone choose to eat such “meat”? Simply because they don’t know what’s in it or that there are safe, natural sources as well as healthy alternatives that don’t involve meat, at all. Our troubled world is pregnant with unhealthy fast food hamburger joints because the public continues to make unhealthy choices by walking through their doors on a regular basis.
The daily decisions you make about the kind of food you feed yourself and those you care about seriously affects not only you and your family, how well and how long you may live, but also the world around you.
As always, when the balance of nature is upset, we pay the price somewhere down the road. Cattle don’t naturally feed on grain – they eat grass. It’s humans that interfere with the natural feeding process by confining them in feed lots and giving them grain products containing high amounts of saturated (bad) fats, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
When you continue to buy and eat meat products that have been raised in questionable conditions and processed in unhealthy ways, guess what – you compromise your own health and the health of the world.
The closest we can come to the animals our ancestors used to hunt is grass fed animals that aren’t dipped, sprayed or dosed with insecticides, antibiotics and hormones.
So what’s the answer if you want to continue to be a meat eater? The answer is to
take greater care when choosing the meat you eat.
Read labels and be more aware of where your meat comes from.
Generally, the larger the chain store, the more polluted the meat source. Buy local from small marketers who care about their produce. Don’t buy meat that’s not grown naturally. Insist on meat without all the chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
Find a natural, grass fed, organic
source, and if this is too tall an order, do yourself a
favor and become a vegetarian.
I talked with a butcher who recently started working in a market that only produces hormone and antibiotic free meats and he told me that the difference between feed lot, grain fed animals and those who feed organically on natural grasses is like night and day.
The flavor is superior, the meat is amazingly tender, it comes off the bone much easier, it requires less cooking time and the product is considerably nutritionally superior.
One of the reasons organic grass fed animals are nutritionally superior is because they have Vitamin A (a potent antioxidant) in their meat, which is linked to a lower risk of heart disease and cancer.
Animals living on pasture creates a stress-free environment and the animals’ diet is more diverse and natural, which in turn gives the meat its delicious
flavor.
Grass fed animals contain less fat which means the meat has fewer calories. As well they have 2-5 times higher concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids than even organic grain fed animals, which are necessary for normal growth and development.
Our Western civilization is sadly lacking in Omega 3 fatty acids which are necessary for proper brain function and which lower the risk of depression, aggressive behavior, attention deficit disorder (ADD), schizophrenia and dementia.
Your heart and cardiovascular system is also dependent on receiving adequate supplies of Omega 3 fatty acids to function efficiently. They lower blood pressure, decrease irregular heart rhythms, and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.
As well, grass fed animals have five times the amount of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid from grass) than their grain fed cousins. CLA’s block tumor growth, help reduce obesity and diabetes and enhance your immune system. The natural green food the animals eat also contains a vast array of minerals, vitamins and micronutrients necessary to a healthy diet.
Research has also shown reduced incidence of cancer in those who have a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acid and it’s been proven that your chance of eating meat tainted with e-coli bacteria is reduced, if not eliminated, if the animal is strictly fed grass during the last 30 days before
slaughter.
Here's a quote for you to consider:
"We are what we eat, it is often said, but of course that's only part of the story. We also are what we eat eats too."
