"Do You Know The Signs?"

Do you know the heart attack and stroke signs that could save a life?

I know that talking about stroke and heart attack is never a pleasant topic, but it’s especially important to be aware during the festive season because many people are under far more strain than usual at this time of year.

We’re all very busy trying to fit in the many extra activities, working late, staying up late, being run off our feet shopping and attending office parties and family get-togethers, eating all those high sugar, high fat special treats and snacks we might not otherwise indulge in, and maybe consuming a little more alcohol than normal, too.

Everyone should know some simple steps to take that could literally save the life of a stroke or heart attack victim, maybe even yourself, and if you work with a group of people, copy this and put it on your work place notice board or email it to your friends, so that everyone can know these simple steps.

How to Identify a Stroke

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, this lack of awareness can spell disaster for the stroke victim because they may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Here’s a easy way that any bystander, including you, can recognize and perhaps save the life of a stroke victim if you can remember to ask them just three simple questions.

(1) Ask the individual to smile.

(2) Ask them to raise both arms.

(3) Ask the person to speak a simple sentence, for instance, tell them, repeat after me, “My dog likes to play ball”.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Researchers discovered that non-medically trained people could easily identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems and they presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association’s annual meeting last February.

Now researchers are urging the general public to learn the three questions because widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of a stroke which could prevent brain damage or even death.

How To Identify a Heart Attack

With heart attack continually on the rise, we all need to learn some simple heart attack self-help.

First, I’ll paint you a hypothetical scene.

It's 7:00 p.m., today you put in two extra hours of overtime at work and now finally you’ve shut that office door behind you and are heading for the parking lot. You’re feeling completely exhausted as you drop into the driver’s seat of your car for that lonely drive home. A few miles down the road you start experiencing severe chest pain that starts to radiate out into your left arm and up into your jaw. You notice that you’re only about five miles from the nearest hospital but you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You start to remember your CPR training, and all you can think of is that the guy who taught the course didn’t tell you how to perform it on yourself.

Now, I’ll tell you HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN YOU’RE ALONE.

The fact is that many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, and without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and then begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before becoming unconsciousness.

These heart attack victims can help themselves by simply coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds continuously until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

This coughing between deep breaths can really work because the deep breaths send oxygen into the lungs and the coughing movements squeeze the heart which keeps the blood circulating and also helps the heart regain normal rhythm. Following this simple procedure may make the difference between a heart attack victim making it to the hospital for help or dying alone in their car.

I am very thankful that a good and caring friend forwarded this information to me in an email and although I don’t know where it came from originally, I think it’s pretty good advice for all of us.
