"Beating the Junk Food Temptations"

The only real way to beat junk food temptations is to change your mind set.

You must educate yourself and your children about how terribly bad it is for you, how it compromises your immune system, how it drains you of energy and makes you sick and how it packs on the unwanted extra pounds that you can never seem to get rid of.

Junk food is the number one cause of our current health predicament called “globesity” and this is not going to get any better until we start making smarter choices for ourselves and our children about what goes into our mouths.

Of course I don’t have to remind you about how dangerous carrying excess weight is, because you’ve already read the many articles and stories about how fat our world has become and how so many are suffering the consequences (over 300,000 deaths each year) by living with diabetes, heart disease and diminished life styles.

So why is it so difficult to beat those junk food temptations? There are many reasons for this, one of the main reasons being that junk food is everywhere you look. It’s big time advertising on TV playing to adults and children alike, it’s in every corner grocery store, packed onto every supermarket shelf, staring back at you when you pay for gasoline for your car, shouting up at you when you buy your movie tickets, under glass at your local coffee shop, in the vending machines where you do your laundry, in hotel lobbies and casinos, in school and office vending machines, at every corner drive-through or fast food chain...like I said, it’s everywhere.

Unfortunately, most humans tend to take the road less traveled when it comes to satisfying a hunger pang or food craving. So rather than considering the health consequences, the top priorities become it’s convenient and I don’t have to really think about it or go far to get it. Junk food manufacturers are literally banking billions on this by making the junk so readily available.

As well, most humans only consider taste when they reach for that glazed donut or extra big Mr. Big bar, and for most, a feel good taste involves lots of sugar, fat and salt...the triple play of junk food.

Also, many people use food as an instant gratification reward system. You’ve had a long hard day and deserve a “sinful” reward, and that chocolate bar or triple layer fudge brownie will give my taste buds immediate pleasure and make me feel good...so what if I get the sugar shakes afterward or feel even more drained than before I ate it? I got instant gratification.

Many people eat for totally the wrong reasons. They’re not really hungry, but they want to give themselves some tasty pleasure and so substitute junk food for stress, unhappiness, loneliness, depression, not feeling good about themselves, etc.

And of course many, many people eat nutritionally empty junk food instead of real food because of lack of time to prepare something that’s actually healthy. For your health and the health of those you care about, you need to make the time.

And don’t forget that junk food or fast food has the added lure of often being cheaper (at the outset anyway) as evidenced by statistics now indicating that Americans spend more dollars on fast junk food ($110 billion in 2000) than on personal computers, software, new automobiles and higher education.

But is it really cheaper, because when you get a little farther down the road and look at the figures which show that those same Americans are spending an estimated $50 billion a year on diet and weight loss products PLUS $117 billion in obesity-related economic and medical costs, eating junk food is hardly cheaper.

So how does the healthy minded individual wage a war against the food industry’s $30 billion advertising campaigns that push junk food, or McDonald’s who can afford to spend $500 million on just one ad campaign, or the junk food manufacturers who spent an estimated $15 billion in 2002 for marketing precisely aimed at children?

Education is power...read, read, read...and then read some more. Educate your children. Read all labels, stop buying the candies, sodas, potato chips, Cheezies, Twinkies, frozen, packaged, unnatural “food” and start thinking fresh and natural.

Remember that junk food contains extra calories, excess sugars, fats and salt that will only make crave more and gain even more weight. Remember that junk food contains unnatural and Frankenstein-like substances that will lead to disease.

Remember that junk food contains a high percentage of toxic chemicals and unnatural colors and flavors.

Remember that giving these sorts of foods to children will only hook them into a lifetime of bad eating habits and give them a very poor start at a time when they really need food that is of a high nutritive value.

Remember that buying junk food contributes to our already over polluted world.

Remember that junk food is not only a waste of your hard earned dollars, but it is also a waste of your health and the health of your children and family, too.

Also, if you haven’t yet seen the movie, “Super Size Me”...this will help to convince you further that it’s important to pay attention about what you eat.

So when you think of food, think of choosing something fresh and natural that will give your body the nutrients it requires to fight disease, boost your immune system and slow down aging. Your body is a fine tuned creation and you need to treat it with respect by putting IN only the finest ingredients.

If you just cut out one item of junk food from your regular diet every week, very soon your body will start to detoxify, you’ll feel better, you’ll have more energy, you won’t get sick so often, and you simply will cease to crave the junk food. When this happens, you are finally back in control of your body and your health.

It’s a great feeling and one truly worthy of your New Year’s resolution.
