"Back to Basics With Healthy Oatmeal"
In today’s over processed fast food world, getting back to basic simple cooking can go a long way toward improving your overall health and longevity and that age old standard called oatmeal can really help.
Eating oatmeal not only helps you get your daily fiber requirement but it can also help you to lose weight. This is because the fiber in oatmeal slows down the rate at which your stomach empties, making you feel fuller longer and thereby curbing your appetite while reducing cholesterol levels at the same time.
Oatmeal is truly one of those nutritional super foods because it contains a variety of healthy benefits beyond just its nutritional value. As well as being a good source of daily fiber, oatmeal is also a source of iron and B vitamins.
As well, oatmeal contains a type of soluble fiber called beta glucan. Many scientific studies have proven that beta glucan can lower blood cholesterol thereby reducing the risk of heart disease while helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, which is helpful for those with diabetes.
A study done in “Circulation” (The Journal of the American Dietetic Association) with 22,000 Finnish men found that an increase of just 3-grams of daily soluble fiber reduced the risk of coronary death by 27%.
Now I can hear you saying, “but oatmeal?!….why not something that tastes better? For those of you that don’t relish the idea of eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, lunch or dinner, don’t despair because you can still get your healthy oatmeal without the sour face.
Your bowl of oatmeal doesn’t have to be just oatmeal. Spice it up with cinnamon or nutmeg, toss in some organic raisins or any dried fruit; try it with sliced bananas cooked right in, or fresh strawberries, apple chunks or berries. Top it all off with a little brown sugar or honey and a bit of milk or yogurt and your previously boring bowl of oatmeal now rivals anything you might have poured out of a cereal box, that’s for sure.
How about some delicious oatmeal/raisin cookies, or blueberry/oatmeal muffins, or add a little oatmeal to your bread recipe. Oatmeal also goes great in meatloaf and you won’t even know it’s in there.
So no matter how you get it, eat more of this healthy whole grain and start feeling your oats today.
