"An Orange a Day Keeps the
Heart Disease Away"
Christmastime is the time for those
boxes of wonderful, juicy, easy to peel Japanese and Chinese oranges that not only taste great but also are heavy duty fighters in the battle against colds and flu and help to boost your immune system.
Of course we all know that the mighty orange contains a high amount of vitamin C and natural
fiber, but don’t forget that they also contain folic acid, beta carotene, potassium, selenium, and antioxidants (to combat free radical damage and help keep you looking young) as well as phytochemicals (compounds in plant foods that boost your immune system).
Also, oranges being part of the citrus fruit category of foods, have a low glycemic index, which makes them excellent nutrition for those suffering with diabetes.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia has concluded, after some 48 international studies of citrus fruits, that:
Those with the highest intake of citrus fruits
reduced their risk of stomach, mouth, esophageal and larynx cancers by as much as 40 to 50%;
One additional serving of citrus fruit each day (beyond the recommended 5 of fresh fruits and vegetables) may reduce the risk of stroke by nearly 20%; and
There is convincing evidence that
cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity may be reduced with daily citrus fruit intake.
Citrus fruits offer a powerful combination of water soluble fiber and more than 60 different types of
flavonoids. Flavonoid gives fruits and vegetables their color, but it’s also a beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
Studies carried out in Finland over a period of 30 years about the different varieties of
flavonoids and their result on chronic diseases have shown that those who consumed more
flavonoid-rich foods were less likely to suffer from many chronic diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, asthma, and Type 2 diabetes, plus they enjoyed longer lives.
The water soluble fiber content in oranges is also very high. Several studies examining the relationship between coronary heart disease and water soluble fiber intake has shown significantly lower risk for those with a high intake of water soluble fiber intake.
A study done in Milan showed that those with the highest intake of water soluble fiber reduced their heart attack risk by an impressive 36%.
So make sure you eat lots of oranges whether they are the ones that come to your
neighborhood in those nice little boxes at Christmastime or the ones that come all year round from other sunny climates.
