TOPIC:  "Toxic Showering and Bathing"

Many people are unaware that the highest levels of daily toxic exposure occur when you’re standing under your shower or taking a relaxing soak in the tub.

Studies carried out at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health have concluded that there is less chemical exposure from drinking unfiltered water than using it to wash your clothes or shower and bathe in it.

In other words (unless you’re a smoker), you subject yourself to more harmful toxins with your daily shower or bath than anything else you do throughout your day. This makes complete sense if you just stop to think about it for a minute.

Your skin covers your entire body making it the largest organ of your body. When you shower or bathe, your entire body is covered with water. Your skin contains millions and millions of pores that act like a sponge soaking up all the toxins and contaminants in your water source and passing them into your blood stream every time you shower or take a bath.

To date there has been little attention paid to skin absorption as a route of entry for innumerable volatile organic compounds. However, researchers have concluded that skin absorption of contaminants in municipal water has indeed been underestimated.

Not only is the penetration of contaminants through your skin and into the body dangerous, but your skin is usually adversely affected as well. For instance, when was the last time you had a shower or bath and didn’t need moisturizers in your cleansers or bath water, shampoo and cream rinse, and then needed to add more after the fact?

I can tell you with absolute certainty that after 30 years of fighting the moisturizing battle, the moment I no longer required moisturizers for my skin, scalp and hair occurred the very day I started using a shower filter.

What can you expect to find in your water source?

  • Chlorine - commonly used in public water systems, is also easily absorbed into your pores when you shower or bathe. You also inhale chlorine and other chemicals in the mist from the water. Chlorine chemically bonds with proteins in your hair, skin and scalp. Your hair then becomes rough, brittle and loses its color. Chlorine causes and worsens skin irritations, drying out your skin and causing itching skin and flaking scalp. As well, chlorine irritates your eyes, leaving them red, itchy and burning and can aggravate the nose, throat and lungs. Chlorine easily passes through your cell walls and attaches to fatty acids in your cells disrupting life-sustaining functions. By-products of chlorine can contribute to cancer, birth defects and heart disease.
  • Arsenic – causes bladder, lung and skin cancer and may cause liver and kidney cancer.
  • Lead – can cause organ damage and lead to mental retardation.
  • Cadmium – can cause breast cancer, kidney damage and bone disease.
  • Bacteria – can cause serious illness or death. Power outages like the recent event in the eastern U.S. can disrupt water flow causing contamination.
  • Chloroform and Trichloroethylene – two highly volatile, toxic chemicals identified in many municipal water supplies. The National Academy of Science has estimated that 200 to 1,000 people may die in the U.S. each year from cancers caused by ingesting these contaminants in water, through bathing or drinking the water.

There’s a simple solution for avoiding your daily dose of toxins and this is to simply remove this hazard by investing in a filter for your shower and bath. This will be money very well spent and you’ll easily recoup the cost when you no longer need to buy cream rinses, water softeners, and skin moisturizers. As well, you’re likely to have less frequent trips to the hair dresser because your color lasts much longer and perhaps fewer trips to the doctor, too because removing this daily dose of toxins will definitely make you look and feel better.
