TOPIC: "Skin Lotions...and Your Skin"

Did you know that you should avoid using products containing fragrance and quaternium 15 as well as lanolin compounds as use of products containing these ingredients could cause contact dermatitis?

Quaternium-15 is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. It is used in many cosmetics (foundations, powders, concealers, liners, shadows, mascara, blushes, removers) and pharmaceutical preparations (shampoos, soaps, moisturizers, shaving products, sunscreens, cleansers). It is also used as a preservative in many commercial and industrial products (adhesives, floor wax, latex paints, joint cement, printing pastes).

I don't know about you, but I am certain that I do not want to moisturize my body with a product containing the same ingredients as what I might wax my floor with.

We should all avoid using products that may contain carninogens such as 2-bromo-2-nitroporopane-1, 3-diol, DEA, and TEA as these may expose you to formaldehyde or nitrosamines.

If you develop skin irritation when trying a new skin lotion first check to see if it contains fragrance and then find one without fragrance. After eliminating fragrance, start eliminating major allergens, such as parabens, propylene glycol, and quaternium 15.

As a consumer concerned about your health, the only way to avoid ingesting the potentially harmful substances contained in many personal care products is to educate yourself. Read the labels.

There are now many healthy alternatives, but you need to know which ones to choose. You likely use a skin lotion every day or at least frequently and therefore it is important to use one that is not increasing your risk of cancer or causing a wide variety of skin irritations.

Some Safe Skin Lotion Alternatives

Where To Find Safe Skin Lotion Alternatives

First look in the "organic" section of your local grocery store. Many stores are now beginning to carry an ever-increasing section of healthy alternatives, including shampoos.

The more you buy these products, the more their presence in your local stores will increase. Next, check your local health food store.

Generally these safer products will be a bit more expensive here than in your local grocery store, but well worth the price if they make your life less toxic.
