"Is Lack of Sleep Making You Fat?"

Did you know that 66% of adults get less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night? This means that 66% of us are operating at less than our peak potential every day.

A recent study from Eastern Virginia Medical School followed a group of 1,000 people and found that as their weight increased, their total sleep time decreased.

In other words, overweight and obese patients slept less than those patients who were of a normal weight, with the overweight subjects sleeping on average almost 2 hours less than those with normal weights.

The study also suggested that a huge increase in sleep time as a means of reducing weight might not be necessary, as just an extra 20 minutes a night seemed to be associated with a loss in excess weight.

Apparently, some studies have shown that lack of sleep causes declines in the production of the hormone leptin, which is an appetite suppressing protein, while at the same time causing a craving for food.

Besides the obvious reasons for getting a good night’s sleep, including rejuvenation, repair and renewal of tissues, forming new red blood cells, promoting bone formation, mental sharpness and improved concentration throughout the day and more energy to get through your day, adequate sleep may help you to lose unwanted weight, too.

So if you’re not getting eight hours or more every night, perhaps you need to adjust your schedule to make a good night’s sleep your priority and consider getting a little more shut eye because lack of sleep may not be just putting your overall health at risk, but it also could be putting on excess pounds, too.
