TOPIC:  "Are You Or Someone You Care About Still Smoking?"

Can you believe that smoking is still the number 1 cause of death in North America today? It’s a little difficult to comprehend how this can still be so in light of all that we now know about the multitude of hazardous effects, not to mention death, associated with smoking cigarettes.

The multitude of chemicals found in tobacco smoke is a shockingly lethal “cocktail” of over 4,000 different chemicals (such as nicotine (a fast-acting addictive poison), paint stripper, toilet cleaner, lighter fluid, acetone, arsenic (rat poison), hydrogen cyanide (gas chamber poison), carbon monoxide (car exhaust and the main gas found in cigarette smoke), etc., etc.) and at least 43 of these are known to cause cancer in humans.

Cigarettes are one of the few products that can be sold legally which can harm and even kill you over time if used as intended. Because of this, there are currently ongoing lawsuits which aim to hold tobacco companies responsible for the adverse effects of smoking on the health of long term smokers.

You smart non-smokers need to be more aware, too, because simply breathing drifting tobacco smoke can really hurt you and your children.

For instance, are you aware that drifting tobacco smoke already kills more people than motor vehicle accidents, all crimes, AIDS, illegal drugs, etc?

The fact is that you are more likely to die as a result of breathing drifting secondhand tobacco smoke than in a car accident. Yearly deaths related to secondhand smoke in the U.S. alone number more than 38,000.

U.S. statistics indicate that 25.7% (26 million) of men over the age of 18 smoke cigarettes, compared to 21% (22.7 million) of women.

There are over 440,000 deaths every year in the U.S. alone contributed to smoking-related illnesses, lung cancer topping the list at more than 125,000, followed by chronic lung disease at 80,000 plus, closely followed by heart disease at over 82,000.

The health benefits associated with quitting smoking are many and for those of you still puffing the weed, perhaps a little reminder about how significantly your health will improve will help you to take the steps necessary to butt out once and for all.

The healing process that can start taking place within just 20 minutes of quitting smoking and the healing process that follows is nothing short of miraculous.

Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse return to normal. Within 8 hours nicotine and carbon levels in your blood reduce by half and your oxygen levels return to normal. 24-hours later carbon monoxide will be eliminated from your body and your lungs will begin to clear out mucous and other smoking debris. 48-hours later there will be no nicotine left in your body and your ability to taste and smell will be greatly enhanced.

At 72-hours your breathing becomes easier as your bronchial tubes begin to relax and your energy levels increase. Two to twelve weeks later your circulation will improve. Three to nine months later your coughing, wheezing and breathing problems improve as your lung function increases by as much as 10%.

After five years of being a non-smoker your risk of heart attack will decrease by about 50%. After ten years of being a non-smoker your risk of lung cancer will fall to half that of a smoker and your risk of heart attack will be the same as someone who has never smoked.

Don’t all these physical benefits sound like good enough reasons to finally take the step and quit today? And don’t forget the savings when you no longer have to buy cigarettes or pay higher insurance premiums, not to mention much fewer facial wrinkles and skin that doesn’t look grey or teeth and fingers that aren’t stained brown from nicotine.

Quitting smoking can be a challenge, but you and those you care about and those who care about having you around for a long and healthy time are worth it.

How can you become a much healthier non-smoker?

Quitting cold turkey is the most successful approach for many smokers. This can take several attempts, but you will improve your chances by preparing your mind for the journey.

Some people quit successfully by cutting down gradually, smoking fewer and fewer cigarettes per day or delaying the first cigarette by an hour each day. This approach may work for you, but you must make sure that your final smoke date is no more than two weeks after you start, or cutting down could literally go on for years.
