"Walk
Your Way to Health"
When was the last time you went for a
walk?...and no...walking from your car to the grocery store or from
your car to the coffee shop doesn’t count.
I mean when was the last time you consciously thought, “hey I’m going to go for a walk”. If you honestly can’t remember, this is not a good thing.
The human body was designed to be in motion and as long as humans have inhabited the earth they have been walking or running. The big difference between way back when and right now is of course that rather than walking, everyone gets in a car and drives all over the place.
This lack of walking about is not only detrimental to adults but also to the younger generation, many of whom don’t even go outside to play because the lure of the computer or TV is just too strong.
Everyone knows that our world is getting fatter by the minute and many of us are becoming healthier shoppers (eating our vegetables, fruits and grains), smarter shoppers (avoiding the fast food lines), and some of us are even sweating it out at the gym.
These are all good steps toward a healthier lifestyle, but if you’re not into the sweat and inconvenience of a regimented workout schedule, why not get back to doing what the body does naturally? Why not get back to walking your way to health?
The simple, non-stress physical activity of walking can reduce your risk of dying from many of today’s top diseases, which would include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, high blood pressure, etc.
Research shows that humans live much longer with just a little daily exercise because not only is the body moving, which it’s designed to do, but the mind is also stimulated when you get out there and see what’s happening in your neighborhood.
Even the Surgeon General is telling everyone to get moving.
You don’t have to walk ten miles every day, but a good 30 or 40 minute walk (about 2-3 miles) will go a long way to keeping you healthy, happy, and thinking a lot clearer.
I’ve found an easy way to get started in a walking routine that will stick, is to find a daily task or goal that can be accomplished without the vehicle.
I use what I call the “coffee reward system”. My favorite coffee shop is about three miles (round trip) from where I live, so I stopped buying coffee to drink at home, and now every day I walk to my coffee shop, enjoy my rewarding cup of coffee, and walk back.
Use your imagination and I’m sure you’ll find something that will work for you.
If not a coffee reward system, perhaps a visit with a friend, or don’t stock up with all the groceries you need in a week, and walk to your grocery
store today for a box of healthy kamut grain cereal, tomorrow for a bag of organic raisons, the next day for an apple, etc.
Maybe you’d like to join a local walking club...meet interesting like minded people...there are lots of them about.
Make it fun and rewarding in some way, get your friends to join in and you’re sure to stick to your new routine of walking your way to health, plus you’ll become part of the bigger picture of creating a healthier nation.
